Library Deposit Collection Program

The St. John’s School Library has joined the

St. Mary’s County Library Deposit Collection Program!

St. John’s now has its own library card! We have just been accepted as a participant in the St. Mary’s County Library Deposit Collection Program (DCP). Through this program, the SMC Library will loan a “batch” of approximately 40 books to the SJS Library for 5-6 weeks. The books will have a paper wrapper indicating that they are Deposit Collection books and will be shelved in a special section in the SJS library. SJS students may check out DCP books from the SJS Library for a two-week loan period. Students must return the DCP books to the SJS Library, not to the SMC Library. At the end of the school’s loan period, St. John’s will return the batch of books to the SMC Library and exchange them for a new batch of loaned books.

This is an exciting way to offer current non-fiction and fiction books to our students as we continue to rebuild our own library holdings. There is no charge to participate in this program, although students are financially responsible for any books that are damaged or lost while checked out to the student. Students must make sure they turn their books in on time so that we can maximize book availability for other students and so we can return all the books as a batch at the end of the school’s loan period. We should get out first batch of books before Thanksgiving.

Child Protection Class

The school year is off to a great start! Many are interested in volunteering. Please remember in order to volunteer, you'll need to attend a Child Protection Class and get fingerprinted.

A Child Protection Class has been scheduled for Monday, October 17, from 6-9pm, here at St. John’s. Please register on-line at www.virtus.org. Remember you have to go to the class and get fingerprinted before you can go on a field trip (Bowles Farm is at the end of the month), help with a classroom or work with any students. If the class says it is full, please send a note to the office and plan on coming anyway.

Collect those Box Tops!

Box Tops for Education - Our goal this year is $1000. Did you know that we can reach that goal if every student turns in only four box tops a month? Imagine if we double that and ask every student to complete and turn in ONE collection sheet. We would actually clear about $2500 with very little effort on our part. Nov. 1st is the deadline for submitting them so we can get a check in December. We need to collect, sort, package and ship them by mid October so please hand yours as soon as possible. Thanks for your support. (Note: Our new coordinator for this program is Beth Dougherty.)

First Place Finish in Speech Contest

On Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, eighth grader, Sarah Papp, participated in the St. Mary's County Fair's Speech Contest. Sarah competed against 10 other middle school students from St. Mary's County Public and Parochial schools. St. John's School is proud to announce that Sarah placed first in the speech contest. The title of her speech was: "Living a Holy Life: Saints in the Making." It was a speech challenging people to rise to God's call to holiness. Sarah wanted to do the speech because, "God calls us to spread his message, and a speech contest was an obvious opportunity to do so."

This is the second year in a row a student from St. John's School has won the speech contest. Way to Go, Eagles!

An Easy Way to Help St. John's!

One of the easiest ways to support St. John's is by linking your store rebate/savings cards to SJS.

St. John's School is registered with school fundraising programs through Giant, Target, McKay's and Food Lion Stores. You can help our school earn dollars by simply designating St. John's School as the school to benefit each time you shop at these stores. Just remember - SJS benefits only when you use your bonus card each time you shop! It's automatic once you link your cards to our school!

You can register your cards online by following the links on this page: Store Rebate Programs - Click Here!

Please take 5 minutes to register your cards. Then you'll support SJS the whole year! (Please note: several stores require you to reenroll your cards each year.)

As always, thanks for supporting SJS!

Help Bail Out Mr. Watters!

Mr. Watters needs your help! He's participating in the 3rd annual Jail & Bail, a “fun-raiser” co-hosted by the Sheriff of St. Mary’s County, Tim Cameron, and the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland. On Monday, September 19, 2011, the Sheriff is sending someone to arrest, handcuff, and take him to the Old Jail Museum in Leonardtown. Once there, he’ll be brought in front of Judge Ment with his court-appointed attorney, Ben Slick. Oh, the embarrassment!

In order for him to be bailed out, he needs to raise $1,500. This is where he could use your help. He has until September 19, 2011 to come up with the bail money and he's asking those who don’t want to see him left in jail to help raise his bail—you don’t want to see him in jail, do you? Any amount toward making his bail would be greatly appreciated.

Proceeds raised will benefit Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland, a crisis pregnancy center that helps women explore their options when facing an unplanned pregnancy. They are serving over 5,000 clients annually and all of their services are free of charge. The $1,500 we raise will pay for one mom and her family to receive all of the services Care Net provides—pregnancy test, ultrasound, peer counseling, pre-natal education, parenting training, etc.

Should you choose to support Care Net and Mr. Watters, please send your donation in an envelope with your name and donation amount written on it. Please make all checks out to 'Care Net' and put St. John's School in the memo line. You can send the envelope in with your child. Thank you for your generosity and your heart for moms in crisis.
