First Place Finish in Speech Contest

On Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, eighth grader, Sarah Papp, participated in the St. Mary's County Fair's Speech Contest. Sarah competed against 10 other middle school students from St. Mary's County Public and Parochial schools. St. John's School is proud to announce that Sarah placed first in the speech contest. The title of her speech was: "Living a Holy Life: Saints in the Making." It was a speech challenging people to rise to God's call to holiness. Sarah wanted to do the speech because, "God calls us to spread his message, and a speech contest was an obvious opportunity to do so."

This is the second year in a row a student from St. John's School has won the speech contest. Way to Go, Eagles!

An Easy Way to Help St. John's!

One of the easiest ways to support St. John's is by linking your store rebate/savings cards to SJS.

St. John's School is registered with school fundraising programs through Giant, Target, McKay's and Food Lion Stores. You can help our school earn dollars by simply designating St. John's School as the school to benefit each time you shop at these stores. Just remember - SJS benefits only when you use your bonus card each time you shop! It's automatic once you link your cards to our school!

You can register your cards online by following the links on this page: Store Rebate Programs - Click Here!

Please take 5 minutes to register your cards. Then you'll support SJS the whole year! (Please note: several stores require you to reenroll your cards each year.)

As always, thanks for supporting SJS!

Help Bail Out Mr. Watters!

Mr. Watters needs your help! He's participating in the 3rd annual Jail & Bail, a “fun-raiser” co-hosted by the Sheriff of St. Mary’s County, Tim Cameron, and the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland. On Monday, September 19, 2011, the Sheriff is sending someone to arrest, handcuff, and take him to the Old Jail Museum in Leonardtown. Once there, he’ll be brought in front of Judge Ment with his court-appointed attorney, Ben Slick. Oh, the embarrassment!

In order for him to be bailed out, he needs to raise $1,500. This is where he could use your help. He has until September 19, 2011 to come up with the bail money and he's asking those who don’t want to see him left in jail to help raise his bail—you don’t want to see him in jail, do you? Any amount toward making his bail would be greatly appreciated.

Proceeds raised will benefit Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland, a crisis pregnancy center that helps women explore their options when facing an unplanned pregnancy. They are serving over 5,000 clients annually and all of their services are free of charge. The $1,500 we raise will pay for one mom and her family to receive all of the services Care Net provides—pregnancy test, ultrasound, peer counseling, pre-natal education, parenting training, etc.

Should you choose to support Care Net and Mr. Watters, please send your donation in an envelope with your name and donation amount written on it. Please make all checks out to 'Care Net' and put St. John's School in the memo line. You can send the envelope in with your child. Thank you for your generosity and your heart for moms in crisis.
