Penny Walk and Science Fair Results

On Saturday, Feb 4, two of our students represented SJS very well at the St. Mary's County Science and Engineering Fair. One was awarded the prestigious Wyle Laboratories Award: 1st Place Junior Division Engineering Award in Applied Aerospace Principles. She was presented with a certificate and a cash award. Congratulations!

As part of our weeklong Catholic Schools Week celebration, our school participated in a "Penny Walk". Students in grades Pre-K through 8 collected coins to raise money for the Sisters of The Institute Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara, a religious community of Marian devotion. Students were challenged to collect enough coins to wrap around the entire gymnasium. Students' enthusiasm and generosity helped them cover the perimeter of the gym four times over and then went on to line the basketball lines on the gym floor.
In total, $1149.73 was raised. In addition to a few Canadian coins and a Bermuda quarter, we collected:

  • 2 Dollars coins
  • 1 Half Dollar coin
  • 1,860 Quarters
  • 2,788 Dimes
  • 1,892 Nickels
  • 22,133 Pennies
